Global mobile phone giant Nokia(NOK) is recalling 46 million BL-5C handset batteries.

In their announcement, Nokia said these batteries could in some rare cases potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging. The mobile phone company said though there had been about 100 reports on the battery's overheating, there was no personal harm or damage caused.

The problematic batteries, which were produced by Japanese Matsushita Battery Industrial Company between December 2005 and November 2006, may have been used on 52 types of Nokia mobile phones including N70, N72, N91, 1600 and 7610.

Nokia said it would change the problematic battery for eligible consumers free of charge.
